Debrett's Kings and Queens of Britain
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (January, 1987)
Author: David Williamson
Average review score:

Informative and interesting BUT...
Okay I love English history and I thought this book did a thorough job on the kings and queens of England. HOWEVER I could detect more than a hint of chauvanism in the writing of it. For example the author speaks of Eleanor of Aquitaine in a rather derogatory way, ignoring her many accomplishments and just stating that "in her youth she was, at any rate, a lady of easy virtue." Where are the comments like that about the dozens of nympho kings Mr Williamson? In fact he then goes to state that Henry II (Eleanor's husband) committed numerous infidelities but "these were to be expected of a man with a wife much older than him." This may have been true in the 12th century but what writer would write that today? Mr Williamson this is now the 20th century. Women are not meek little creature to be kept at home looking after their men. Get with it.

Lots of Fun! GOOD ONE!
Wouldn't pay the list price but on sale this is a great book/activity- Theater folds out and there are paper doll type figures that can stand up. Comes with scene changes and a play book. My daughters 7 and 5 both like this although use their own imaginative play more than the play book. With parental help, they will love putting on the plays! Really cute- a very OOOOHHHHHHH present for at a birthday party!

Fatal Friendship
Published in Paperback by Richardson & Steirman & Black (December, 1987)
Author: Stanley Loomis
Average review score:

It's such a shame this book is out of print
The two best biographies on Marie Antoinette are 'Queen of France' by Caselot and 'Fatal Friendship' by Loomis.

Fatal Friendship focuses mostly on the friendship between the Queen and Count Axel Fersen, the breathtaking escape attempt and their deaths. Loomis leaves it up to the reader to decide whether or not the two were actual physical lovers, but with the evidence presented, not only do I believe they were, but that Louis XVI knew, and didn't care.

The highlight of the book is the escape attempt though. As you read on and on at a harrowing pace, you almost believe they'll make it. But the stupid mistakes, lack of judgement, and time wasted sealed the fate of the royal family.

As we all know Marie Antoinette died on the guillotine, but do you know the violent death that Axel Fersen faced? Or the legend of the ring that was given to him by Marie?

An excellent, well written, and easy to follow book that made me fall in love with the Queen and see her not as a monster, but as a woman and a mother who despite trying her best, just couldn't make anything work out.

The Five Hundred Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 1999)
Authors: Dr. Seuss and Dr Seuss

Keep your "Eggs and Ham" I like the HATS!!
This is a truly AMAZING book. The first time I brought it home from the Grade School Library I was enchanted! Bartholomew Cubbins is challenged with the difficulties brought on by his hat. He is almost beheaded for not taking his hat off before the King. He get's out of that though because of his hat. He is chanted upon by wise men and cats. The nephew of the King does not like Bartholomew because he is getting more attention than he. Bartholomew continues to remove hat after hat the entire time. In the end they become grander and grander. The thing that almost got Bartholomew killed it what saves him in the end.

I brought this book home over 500 times. Before I could read my mom read it to me, even when I could read I made her still read it to me. I treasure this Seuss book above all of my others. Bartholomew has an amazing time trying to take his hat off. This book has all the wonderful Seuss words and adventure that is to be expected.

The Frog Princess
This was a book of many unexpected adventures. Great for kids! I loved the way E.D.Baker wrote his/her book so fast paced. I remember when my mother and I picked it up at the bookstore. At first I wasn't all that interested. But it was actually really cool!!! I can only hope that you and others will find this book satisfactory.

The Great Queens
Published in Hardcover by Rowman & Littlefield Publishing (10 January, 1992)
Author: Rosalind Clark
Average review score:

Very important work for anyone interested in Irish goddesses
This is a wonderfully thorough and readable scholarly study of women of power in Irish legend and literature: also a fascinating description of how myths are modified to serve the needs of different historical eras. The price of the book is unfortunate. A paperback edition would probably sell well to readers interested in Irish studies or in women's studies.
